Musical but cold Saturday

Had a lazy morning of Sims-playing and housework-avoidance. Managed to stop gaming long enough to make iPod-video versions of the four concert songs I've finished editing, to show Vicki at my voice lesson this afternoon. She said I sounded really good on "Junior's Farm" (my only solo of the four). Also, in the Blue Bear lobby before my lesson I ran into Jane Sharp, who I took a really good voice class ("Full Body Singing") from at the Berkeley Jazzschool a number of years ago. She and Vicki have similar teaching styles, basically the bel canto method which is appropriate for classical as well as popular music.

Walked home to drop my stuff and immediately head out again to meet up with Mike and his friends at The Mint for some late-afternoon karaoke. I also invited Frank who I've known at work for a number of years, but we've never done anything socially. He came with his partner Patrick, who sang three songs quite well, and Patrick's mother came along also. (She later told me she hadn't heard her son sing in ten years.)

I did two standbys - "Abacab" and "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" - and one new one, "Leader of the Band" (a favorite Dan Fogelberg tune). I didn't know the words well (I actually Googled the lyrics beforehand on my Treo in case the lyrics on the screen were off, as they sometimes are) and thought I was out of tune in several places. But the other songs came out OK. Mike, Rex, and Robin all sang good stuff too. Especially enjoyed hearing Mike do Lou Reed's "Walk on the Wild Side" even though it ended up being the shorter, more commercially safe version.

After, Frank invited me to dinner with his group, which was nice. Vicki and Robin had both invited me to parties they were having tonight, but I was a bit tired and declined. Very cold coming home - walked to Van Ness (once I realized it was before 10 p.m. and I could actually take MUNI underground), got off at Powell, eyed the cable car line briefly and decided to walk home. Hiking uphill is great for keeping warm. :-)
