Today was the final day of our SoCal vacation. So of course this was the cue for the sun to come out. Fortunately we did have a bit of time to take advantage of the warmer weather. We first had breakfast with grandma and snapped a few photos from her balcony, which has a nice view of the Coronado bridge. Then we went to Ocean Beach, a cool, laid-back San Diego community (not to be confused with the San Francisco beach of the same name). I got some of my best photos from the trip here, though we didn't have much time to spend on the beach itself. We enjoyed a very tasty lunch of vegan strudel (!) at Stephanie's Bakery, prompting Ziggy to buy six more strudels for the road. He also scored on a fabulous jacket at a hip Ziggyesque clothing store near the beach. We arrived at the airport with plenty of time to spare, had a very smooth on-time flight, and caught a cable car home from the Embarcadero BART.
All in all I was happy with this trip, because despite the various frustrations, we spent valuable time with friends and family, and had very good luck finding vegan food. Using Ziggy's Tom-Tom GPS also really helped us get around, though sometimes we had to rely on Hertz's "Neverlost" Magellan GPS instead; they each had their advantages and disadvantages. Better preparation with regard to warmer clothing, geocaching maps, and music for the road would have been useful, as would have shifting the whole trip to April for better weather. The wifi problems couldn't really be avoided, and Ziggy found the beds at two of the hotels to be uncomfortable, though I was OK with them. Having the new Mac laptop was great even though we couldn't always get online with it; I could use a familiar Mac interface for photo editing and e-mail, and we could watch videos on iTunes smoothly. So on balance, a successful SoCal excursion.
