New Mac on its way! - the funcrunch files

Feb. 12th, 2008 11:03 am New Mac on its way!

It was bad enough that adding a higher-end graphics card delayed the order by 2-3 weeks; then, my credit card company thoughtfully denied the charge without bothering to notify me why. After the third time the charge was denied by Apple, boyziggy phoned the credit card company last night (as this card is in his name - I'm giving him some extra airline miles ;-) ) and they said it was an unusually high charge. Well for a single charge maybe, but not that out of whack with our recent spending habits, and regardless wouldn't it have been courteous to notify us?

Anyway, I'm excited as this will be my first new desktop Mac in over four years. My first-generation G5 is really showing its age now that I'm processing a lot of video and huge Raw image files. I have a dual-core Intel Mac at work and the speed difference is very noticeable.

Here are the (annotated) specs; it should arrive on Thursday:

Two 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon [8 cores baby!]
2GB (2x1GB) [RAM - I'll probably add another 2GB 3rd-party later]
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB [this had better be worth the wait]
500GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb [will definitely add at least one more 3rd-party HD for backup]
One 16x SuperDrive
APPLE MIGHTY MOUSE [won't be used ;-) ]
WIRED KYBRD/MAC OS X
Country Kit
APP FOR MAC PRO - COL/AE-INT [3 year AppleCare extended warranty - has paid for itself every time!]

Impressive hardware... but seconded on the AppleCare, especially for home machines without separate IT service contract support.

Now toys! Cool!

When you get it set up, you interested in selling the G5?

Or for that matter if the G4 is more powerful than the powerbook, or would at least make a good music server, and you're selling it cheaply....

Ziggy's chip-upgraded it so it's still useful, but he was planning on giving it to one of his friends back East after the swap.

Good gravy, that's some serious kit. You planning on crunching some H.264 there?
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB [this had better be worth the wait]

Nice card; I approve :-). And the drivers are improving all the time...

What's a Country Kit? Software that makes the computer address you with phrases like "Y'all" and "shucks", and puts a log cabin border around all windows?
