Some good news on the health front - the funcrunch files

Oct. 1st, 2008 08:51 am Some good news on the health front

My total cholesterol, just measured yesterday, is 143 mg/dL. LDL 79, HDL 34. The latter is considered a bit low, but the total amount is very good so I'm not concerned about it. Triglycerides are 150 mg/dL, also well within the acceptable range.

My weight yesterday went just below 145 lbs for the first time in many years. With my height of 5' 4 1/2", my BMI is finally in the "normal" range. I hope to keep it there.

When you get back into a little more exercise, that HDL number should come up a bit. Exercise is the best way to raise HDL. Mine jumped from 34 to 42 in about 3 months from just walking moderately. If you are already walking a little (which I think you are) you might need more intensity to bring it up.

We are the same height, and 140-145 is my goal weight as well. I just hit a major milestone this morning: 199.8. WOOHOO, no more 200's!!!

Congrats on getting below 200! I typically walk for at least 30 minutes a day, six days a week. I'm not too concerned about the HDL though.

Low HDL is not a problem if total and LDL cholesterol are also low, according to this article. The author cites other relevant research in later newsletters as well.
