Friday fun

After a day of sluggishness, boyziggy and I recovered with some very yummy homemade soup (featuring sweet potato, chard, and veggie sausage) and went to Lisa's karaoke birthday party at The Spot Lounge in the Sunset. We were going to take the L Taraval but didn't want to wait 20 minutes, so took the K to West Portal and walked the rest of the way. It was a very relaxed, mostly flat half-hour walk on a warm night.

At The Spot we greeted Lisa and her friends, including more of Ziggy's past Mime Troupe co-workers. She had a private room in the back with two big-screen TVs. The song list wasn't as comprehensive as the Mint's, of course, but I managed to find several of my regulars: "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me", "Have You Ever Seen the Rain", "The Logical Song", and "You Are the Sunshine of My Life". All these were accompanied by rather pointless videos, and the music was somewhere in between a MIDI interpretation and the actual song, but it was quite fun. Our performances were scored - I'm sure it was only paying attention to rhythm, not pitch, which actually penalizes more creative singers I would think - and I actually got a 97 on my second song. As of the time we left, no one had beat me ;-)

We also enjoyed very tasty soju cocktails: lychee, raspberry, and strawberry. I've been eating really healthy meals this week, with mostly whole or minimally-processed foods, so I felt a bit bad about having the fake meat and several alcoholic drinks tonight, especially on a no-exercise day (the walk was too slow to really count). But I've got to allow myself a little leeway, no?

Tonight: Jonathan Coulton and Paul and Storm at the Great American Music Hall. Tomorrow: Josh Kornbluth at the Contemporary Jewish Museum. (Both are sold out.)
