I'm feeling a great sadness as I read the news of Katrina. I can't remember feeling this depressed about a catastrophic event in a long time. The sheer extent of the devastation is overwhelming. Though others in the world have had to deal with far worse ongoing nightmares - ecological and otherwise - this one hits close to home, even though my home is many miles away.

Living in San Francisco as we do, boyziggy has reminded me that we need to get our own emergency plans and supplies in order. The comparisons to the 1906 San Francisco earthquake are quite apt. Those faces in the news could be ours tomorrow.
