Protopage - the funcrunch files

Dec. 22nd, 2005 01:13 pm Protopage

Protopage, an Ajax-based application, is extremely cool. Basically you can instantly create your own home page and dynamically update it by adding RSS feeds, photos, wallpaper, etc. You can have both private and public views too (though I don't have much on my public page yet, having just found out about the site this morning through the Inside the Net podcast). Check it out.

Wow. 200K of obfuscated javascript. I'm not really hip to this new-fangled "push all the processing into the browser" stuff, but I guess that's the basic idea of AJAX. The one big catch seems to be that all your data is stored on a server in England.

But it does look really cool.

I've never been a Javascript fan, believe me. But I've been won over by these new-fangled sites like Google Personalized and Protopage that let you easily create and customize your own web browsing experience. Gah, I sound like an advertisement. But seriously, putting this power into the hands of non-techie users is not such a bad thing. I've been looking for an alternative to the awkward Wiki-style syntax for finding something that my very non-techie co-workers may be willing to adopt.

The issue of storing the information remotely is a privacy issue, true. But I figure I can always install the software on my own web server (once easily configurable packages become available) if I'm concerned about that.
