Classical Sunday

Had a lovely afternoon in Palo Alto with opus119, who treated me to Brahms, Ravel, Debussy, and other classical gems on his gorgeous grand piano. I made some attempts at Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, and others myself, plus some Elton John and Billy Joel thrown in for good measure. I surprised myself with the Brahms Rhapsody in Gm (Op. 79 No. 2), which was the last piece I worked back in high school when I still took piano lessons. At first I played it so badly that I didn't even want to try, but when I came back to it a little later and played from memory, it was like I had suddenly been transported backward 20 years and the music was just flowing out of me. I actually startled myself and stopped after the first page. But I did play more pieces later.

I thank Mark heartily for being not only a gifted pianist and warm friend, but perhaps my new musical muse. :-)
